Shoulder Impingement

Do you experience some type of catching or clicking in your shoulders?

Do you feel some limitation or restriction in your motion?

You may be experiencing impingement.

What is impingement?

Impingement of the shoulder occurs when the tendons inside your shoulder rub or catch on the nearby tissue of bone.

For example, if the head of the humerus or the upper arm bone isn't moving well on the glenoid, which is part of the shoulder blade, what we find sometimes is you may experience some catching.

Why do you want to address impingement?

If left untreated, shoulder impingement will continue to cause pain and limited range of motion.  It can also lead to more serious issues, such as a rotator cuff tear.

How do we address impingement?

One route that you can take is surgery.  The surgeon will shave down the bones to relieve pressure on the rotator cuff or bursa.

While that may be appropriate for some people, I think there are things you need to look at, before you go down that path.

It is important to look at the structures and all the other parts of a puzzle. In this case, your muscles, your ligaments and the surrounding structures of your joint. If you have some muscles that are long and weak or short and overactive, it can throw off your movement and cause restrictions.

So if you're experiencing impingement please feel free to reach out to us. We would love to take a look at your movement and get to the root of the problem.
