Why rolling out is not going to fix your tight IT band.

The IT band, or Iliotibial band, is the ligament that runs down the outside of the thigh from the hip to the shin.  It attaches to the knee to help stabilize and move the joint.  The IT band can become tight or inflamed due to overuse.

 

A tight IT band is something that a lot of athletes or active adults complain of. When I ask them what they have to done to help this, I usually get " I have rolled out on it." This will make it feel better, sometimes, but the tightness remains.

 

When it comes to the IT band, you need to know that it is connected to a muscle called the TFL. (Tensor Fascia Latae) The TFL is a small muscle that lies just in front of the hip and connects to the IT band. 

The mistake a lot of people are making, is that when they feel that tightness or restriction, they are only trying to address the IT band. People need to realize that the IT band is tight because the TFL is tight.
